Importantly, yoga does not "fix" the nervous system. It does not erase trauma or eliminate the capacity for threat detection. What it does is restore flexibility—the ability to shift between states, to down-regulate when the threat has passed, to access rest without vigilance. Yoga can be introduced early in treatment, even before a patient is ready for exposure-based or narrative therapies, because it does not require verbal processing or confrontation of traumatic content. It can also be practiced at home, offering patients a tool for self-regulation between sessions and beyond the end of formal treatment.

The challenge lies in implementation. Not all yoga is trauma-sensitive, and not all instructors are trained to recognize or respond to signs of nervous system dysregulation. For some individuals, increased interoceptive awareness can initially heighten distress, particularly if bodily sensations have been associated with trauma. In some cases, starting with breath-focused or restorative practices may be more tolerable than dynamic movement.
