What Is Interoception, Exactly?

You may have run into this word — interoception — in a wellness article or a podcast and wondered what it actually refers to. The short answer is that interoception is the nervous system's sense of the body's internal state, and it is one of the more important concepts to understand once you have started thinking in predictive processing terms.
While the traditional five senses point outward — vision, hearing, touch, taste, smell — interoception points inward. It is the sensing of heart rate, breathing, temperature, hunger, fullness, muscular tension, the low-grade thrum of the digestive system, and dozens of other signals arising from the body's own tissues (Craig, 2015) [Externally Validated Evidence]. Most of it is running below awareness at any given moment. Some of it surfaces when it needs to.
Why predictive processing needs interoception is worth being clear about. In the predictive frame, the nervous system is continuously running models of the body as well as of the outside world. Emotions, on some accounts, are what the brain produces when it integrates interoceptive predictions with contextual information — a specific pattern of predicted heart rate and muscular tension, in a specific context, gets labelled anger. Or fear. Or grief. Different labels, different biological patterns, all built out of interoceptive prediction.
This is why interoception matters practically. Two nervous systems with different interoceptive accuracy can be running the same internal state and labelling it differently. Someone with high interoceptive accuracy tends to distinguish anxiety from excitement or hunger from fatigue more reliably. Someone with lower accuracy — often due to trauma, dissociation, or simply less practice attending to the body — may register only a vague sense of activation and struggle to know what it means.
Interoception is trainable. Simple practices like slow breathing with attention to the physical sensation of the breath, body scans, and mindful eating measurably improve interoceptive awareness over time. This is one of the reasons those practices are so useful. They are not just calming. They are training the nervous system to read its own internal signals more accurately, which improves the quality of every interoceptive prediction downstream.
A useful frame is this: interoception is the raw material out of which the felt sense of being a self is built. Not all of what we call the self — but a substantial share of the felt part, the part that has moods and hungers and fatigue and pleasure. Training the sensor is training the substrate that emotional experience is quietly made of.
One small caveat is worth naming. High interoceptive sensitivity is not automatically good. In some conditions — panic disorder, health anxiety, some chronic pain presentations — the nervous system is over-attending to interoceptive signals and generating strong predictions from them, which drives the very symptoms the person wants to reduce. The therapeutic goal in those cases is often not more interoception but better-calibrated interoception. What matters is not quantity of body attention. It is quality.
