Insight is necessary. It is not sufficient. A Framework that has been understood is not yet a Framework that has been changed.
The Layer Problem
Insight lives in the language layer of the nervous system. Patterns live in a deeper layer — procedural, autonomic, interoceptive. When a person achieves insight into a Pattern, the language layer files a new story. The deeper layers do not automatically receive the update. Which is why understanding a Pattern for years is entirely compatible with continuing to enact it.
What the Deeper Layers Need
The deeper layers do not update on stories. They update on embodied experience. The Pattern updates only when the body has lived, repeatedly, through moments in which a different response was made and turned out to be safe. That living-through is not something insight can supply. Only practice can.
Where Insight Fits
This does not make insight useless. Insight is the doorway that makes practice possible. Without insight, the Pattern cannot be seen, and the practice has nowhere to work. With insight, the practice knows what it is meeting. The right relationship between insight and practice is not one instead of the other. It is insight first, and then, on the ground insight opens, practice done repeatedly, over time.
You cannot think your way out of a Framework you did not think your way into.
