Building a More Flexible Framework

The Nirva Editors 8 min read

The goal of the Method is not a Framework without Patterns. It is a Framework with more than one response available at every important moment.

What Flexibility Actually Is

A flexible Framework is not one that has eliminated its old Patterns. It is one in which the old Patterns have been joined by new ones. The withdrawal is still available; so is the reach. The perfectionism is still available; so is the imperfect deliverable. Flexibility is not the absence of old shapes. It is the presence of options.

Why the Old Shapes Do Not Disappear

The nervous system does not delete old learning. It cannot afford to. What it can do is add new learning alongside the old, and, over time, shift which learning is reached for first. Under stress, exhaustion, illness, or threat, the older learning will often still be reached for. That is not failure. That is what any learning system does. Flexibility is measured on ordinary days, not on the hardest ones.

How Flexibility Is Built

Flexibility is built through repeated small experiences of choosing something other than the automatic response, and having it turn out to be safe. Each experience adds a small piece of new evidence. Over years, the new evidence accumulates enough that the Framework, on ordinary days, reaches first for the newer, more current option. The older option is still there. It has simply stopped being the default.

A flexible Framework is not one without Patterns. It is one with more than one Pattern available.
