Working Memory and Emotional Intensity

How holding a memory while completing another task may reduce vividness or emotional force.

Definition

One mechanistic account of EMDR proposes that holding a memory in mind while simultaneously performing another attention-demanding task competes for working-memory resources — reducing the vividness and emotional force of the memory over time.

Why it matters

This is one of the more testable explanations of what bilateral stimulation might be doing, and it has been supported in laboratory studies.

The Science

Working-memory tax during memory recall has been shown in controlled experiments to reduce subsequent vividness and distress ratings of emotional memories.

The NSI Perspective

NSI likes explanations that can be tested. The working-memory account is not the whole story, but it is a real thread.

Clinical Implications

Clinical protocols often include a dual-attention component. This is not decoration; it is likely part of the mechanism.

Practical Application

In moments of intrusive memory outside of therapy, engaging attention on a demanding external task (counting backward, describing surroundings) can transiently reduce vividness.
