Definition

Change often feels uncomfortable because prediction errors, effortful attention, and disruption of habitual circuits are metabolically and neurologically costly. Discomfort is a feature, not a bug.

Why it matters

Framing discomfort as expected — not failure — helps people persist through the biological cost of change.

The Science

New learning engages prefrontal effort, produces prediction errors, and temporarily reduces automaticity. All of these consume energy and produce felt effort.

The NSI Perspective

NSI treats discomfort of change as evidence that change is happening — not evidence that something is wrong.

Clinical Implications

Preparing patients for the discomfort of change improves persistence.

Practical Application

When change feels hard, that may be the change actually happening. Discomfort is often data, not verdict.
