Definition

Change often feels uncomfortable because prediction errors, effortful attention, and disruption of habitual circuits are metabolically and neurologically costly. Discomfort is a feature, not a bug.

The Science

New learning engages prefrontal effort, produces prediction errors, and temporarily reduces automaticity. All of these consume energy and produce felt effort.
