Definition
Thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) regulate metabolism, temperature, energy, mood, and cognition. Under- and over-function produce distinct clinical pictures often mistaken for other conditions.
Why it matters
Thyroid dysfunction is one of the most commonly missed contributors to fatigue, mood change, and cognitive complaints. Screening is cheap and consequential.
The Science
Hypothyroidism can mimic depression; hyperthyroidism can mimic anxiety. TSH and free T4 (and sometimes T3, thyroid antibodies) are the standard screening tests.
The NSI Perspective
NSI holds thyroid screening as basic due diligence for many psychiatric-adjacent complaints.
Clinical Implications
Consumer “thyroid optimization” approaches often exceed the evidence. Standard endocrine care remains the foundation.
Practical Application
If persistent fatigue, mood change, or unexplained symptoms are present, a proper thyroid panel is a reasonable early step.
