Definition

Despite its structured protocol, EMDR is not delivered by a manual. The therapist’s attunement, responsiveness, and skill in pacing are essential parts of what makes it work.

Why it matters

Protocol without relationship can be unsafe. Relationship without protocol can drift. Both matter.

The Science

Therapeutic alliance is one of the most consistent predictors of outcome across psychotherapies, including EMDR.

The NSI Perspective

NSI treats the therapist as a co-regulator, not a technician.

Clinical Implications

Training in relational skills is not optional for EMDR clinicians, even in a structured method.

Practical Application

Trust your read of a potential clinician. If something is off, it may show up in the work.

Before you go

Two quiet questions.

How much of what you just read named something you already know inside your own body?

How much did this open a new question you didn’t have before?
