Definition
The limits of inflammation claims refer to the boundary between what current evidence supports and the far larger set of claims made in popular discourse about inflammation as the cause of nearly every illness.
Why it matters
Inflammation is real and important. It is also invoked as an explanation for far more than the evidence supports. Distinguishing the two protects patients from mis-treatment and preserves the credibility of legitimate anti-inflammatory care.
The Science
Chronic low-grade inflammation is linked to cardiovascular, metabolic, some psychiatric, and some neurodegenerative conditions. It is not, however, the single unified cause of aging, all fatigue, all mood problems, or all illness. Many popular tests marketed as “inflammation panels” have limited clinical validity for their marketed uses.
The NSI Perspective
NSI holds epistemic honesty as core practice. Naming what we know and what we do not is part of respect.
Clinical Implications
Clinicians should evaluate inflammation-based claims with the same rigor as any other. Marketing is not evidence.
Practical Application
Take inflammation seriously without turning it into an explanation for everything. Both extremes cost you information.
