Definition

The gut, immune system, and brain form an integrated communication network involving microbiota, gut barrier function, immune cells, vagal afferents, and central circuits.

The Science

Roughly 70% of immune cells reside near the gut. Microbiota shape immune training, produce neuroactive metabolites, and influence vagal signaling to the brain. Dysbiosis and barrier dysfunction are implicated in autoimmune, metabolic, and mood conditions.
