Definition

Self-concept is the internal representation of who one is. It develops through relationship, feedback, and reflection, and it continues to evolve across the lifespan.

Self-concept shapes attention, memory, motivation, and mental health. Rigid or negative self-concepts constrain what feels possible; flexible, accurate self-concepts open it.

The Science

Self-concept involves medial prefrontal circuits and is shaped by mirroring, feedback, and cultural narratives. It is modifiable through experience, therapy, and meaningful relationships.

NSI treats self-concept as a nervous-system pattern — stable enough to hold identity, plastic enough to grow.
