Definition

The cortisol awakening response (CAR) is the sharp rise in cortisol that occurs in the first 30–45 minutes after waking. It is a normal, adaptive part of morning physiology, not a sign of stress.

Why it matters

Popular wellness content often frames morning cortisol as pathological. It is usually the opposite — a healthy signal that the body is preparing for the day. Blunted or absent CAR is more concerning than a normal spike.

The Science

CAR is distinct from the diurnal cortisol slope and is influenced by sleep quality, anticipated demands, chronic stress, and depression. Both hyperactive and blunted CAR are associated with different vulnerability profiles.

The NSI Perspective

NSI holds CAR as an ordinary morning phenomenon deserving respect, not fear. Interventions to "lower morning cortisol" often misunderstand the biology.

Clinical Implications

Interpretation of salivary or serum cortisol requires timing, context, and knowledge of individual variation.

Practical Application

You are not supposed to wake up calm and mellow. A brief rise in cortisol is the biology of showing up.
