Definition

Testosterone is a steroid hormone produced in both sexes (in different amounts) that influences muscle, bone, sexual function, cognition, mood, and behavior. Its cultural narratives frequently exceed its actual biology.

Why it matters

Testosterone is loaded with cultural meaning — masculinity, aggression, drive — much of which the science does not support. Precision helps.

The Science

Testosterone has real effects on libido, muscle mass, red blood cell production, and mood. Effects on aggression are context-dependent and modest. Testosterone deficiency in males is a real clinical entity; screening and treatment require care to distinguish from age-normal changes.
