Definition

Sleep is deeply tied to body temperature. Core temperature drops as sleep onset approaches, and disruptions in thermoregulation impair sleep.

Why it matters

The right temperature is one of the simplest and most underused sleep interventions.

The Science

Distal warming (feet, hands) helps redirect heat outward and cools the core, promoting sleep onset. Cool bedroom temperatures (roughly 16–19°C for most adults) support consolidated sleep. Menopausal thermoregulatory changes disrupt sleep in identifiable ways.

The NSI Perspective

Clinical Implications

Simple environmental changes — warm bath 1–2 hours before bed, cool bedroom — have meaningful effects.

Practical Application

A warm shower before bed and a cool room after is more useful than most sleep gadgets.
