Definition
Stress physiology modulates the immune system in dose- and duration-dependent ways. Short-term stress can mobilize immunity; chronic stress can suppress, dysregulate, and inflame it.
Why it matters
The cliché that “stress makes you sick” is scientifically supported — but oversimplified. Precision matters, because it changes what to do about it.
The Science
Acute stress increases circulating immune cells and can enhance response to challenge. Chronic stress elevates glucocorticoids and sympathetic output in ways that impair viral defense, wound healing, and vaccine response, while paradoxically promoting low-grade inflammation.
The NSI Perspective
NSI treats sustained stress not as a moral failing but as a physiological input the whole system responds to. Reducing chronic threat load is immune care.
Clinical Implications
Stress-reduction is a legitimate clinical intervention with immunological consequences — not a soft add-on.
Practical Application
If you get sick more when you are stretched thin, that is not coincidence. Rest, connection, and regulation are immune practices.
