Stress Adaptation

Definition

Stress adaptation is the evolved capacity of the nervous system to respond to challenge with rapid physiological mobilization, followed by ideally rapid return to baseline. Chronic activation without return is where pathology lives.

Why it matters

Naming acute stress as adaptive, and chronic activation as pathological, protects patients from binary framings.

The Science

Selye’s general adaptation syndrome and later allostasis models (McEwen, Sterling) describe how the nervous system anticipates and adjusts to load. Chronic allostatic load produces measurable disease risk.

The NSI Perspective

NSI treats stress adaptation as a resource — to be respected, not exhausted.

Clinical Implications

Care that supports return to baseline, not merely reduction of stressors, aligns with the biology.

Practical Application

Stress is not the enemy. Not being able to recover from it is.
