Definition
Status is the differential rank of individuals within a group. Nervous systems track it continuously, and it has real physiological, health, and behavioral consequences.
Why it matters
Framing status as an evolved biological variable clarifies why it matters to us so much — without endorsing hierarchies as inevitable or fair.
The Science
Both prestige-based and dominance-based status pathways have been described in evolutionary anthropology. Both produce measurable physiological signatures in humans and other primates.
The NSI Perspective
NSI treats status as legitimate biological subject matter deserving honest analysis — and refuses to romanticize hierarchy.
Clinical Implications
Status-related suffering is real biology worth naming in individual and organizational work.
Practical Application
If status dynamics bother you, this is not superficiality. Your body is reading real signals.
