Definition

Sleep is essential to plasticity. Consolidation of learning — declarative, procedural, and emotional — happens largely during sleep, particularly slow-wave and REM sleep.

Why it matters

This links Collections 11 and 22 explicitly: sleep is not preparation for learning; it is where learning becomes durable.

The Science

Slow-wave sleep supports declarative consolidation; REM supports emotional and procedural consolidation. Sleep deprivation impairs both acquisition and consolidation of new learning.
