Definition

Sleep and pain are tightly coupled. Poor sleep is a strong predictor of worsening pain, and pain-driven sleep disruption is one of the primary perpetuators of chronic pain states.

Why it matters

Chronic pain is often treated with medications while sleep is left unaddressed. Reordering priorities can transform outcomes.

The Science

Longitudinal studies show sleep problems more strongly predict future pain than pain predicts future sleep problems. Sleep loss reduces descending pain modulation, elevates inflammatory tone, and lowers pain thresholds. CBT-I improves both sleep and pain.

The NSI Perspective

NSI treats sleep restoration as pain treatment, not adjunctive care.

Clinical Implications

Every chronic pain plan should include a real sleep plan. Screening for sleep apnea is often warranted.

Practical Application

If your pain feels worse on bad-sleep days, that is neurology, not weakness. Sleep repair is pain repair.
