Definition

Sleep is when much of memory consolidation occurs. Different sleep stages support different kinds of memory — slow-wave sleep for declarative content, REM for emotional and procedural learning.

Why it matters

Sleep loss is not just fatigue. It is a direct disruption of learning and memory. Understanding this reframes rest as clinical intervention.
