Definition

Skill development is the gradual acquisition of complex capacities through practice, feedback, and refinement. It involves distinct phases and specific neuroplastic changes.

Why it matters

Understanding skill acquisition removes moralism from learning. Nobody is born with skills; they are built by processes that can be understood and supported.

The Science

Fitts and Posner’s stages (cognitive, associative, autonomous) remain useful. Deliberate practice research (Ericsson) shows structured, effortful practice with feedback drives most improvement. Neuroplastic changes shift from broad recruitment to efficient, focused activation as skill develops.

The NSI Perspective

NSI treats skill development as legitimate, patient work — not talent identification.

Clinical Implications

Rehabilitation and therapy benefit from applying skill-learning principles explicitly.

Practical Application

What you can do today reflects the practice you already have. What you will do tomorrow reflects the practice you do now.
