Shift Work

Definition

Shift work is any work schedule outside the standard daytime hours. It disrupts circadian biology in ways that produce real, measurable health effects, and it is one of the most under-treated occupational health issues.

Why it matters

Shift workers are asked to override their biology for their livelihood. Acknowledging the cost — and mitigating it — is a matter of both health and justice.

The Science

Shift work is classified as a probable human carcinogen by IARC and is associated with metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment, and mood disorders. Directional rotation, light exposure, and strategic napping can reduce, but not eliminate, harm.

The NSI Perspective

NSI treats shift work as a legitimate biological stressor deserving legitimate protective care.

Clinical Implications

Shift-work sleep disorder is a diagnosable, treatable condition. Occupational health approaches should include circadian science.

Practical Application

If you work shifts, you are not weak for struggling. You are a mammal doing extraordinary work.
