Definition

Sensory overload is a state in which sensory input exceeds processing capacity, producing distress, cognitive impairment, or shutdown. It is common in autism, ADHD, migraine, and after concussion — and can occur in typical nervous systems under sufficient load.

Why it matters

Naming sensory overload as biology, not weakness, changes both self-relation and environment design.

Sensory processing differences are documented across many conditions. Environmental modifications reduce distress and improve function.

Practical Application

If bright lights, crowds, and loud noise overwhelm you, you are not being dramatic. That is a nervous system reading its limits.
