Definition

Safety learning is the process by which the brain learns that something previously predicted as dangerous is now safe. It is more effortful than danger learning and requires repetition, context, and time.

Why it matters

Understanding the asymmetry between danger learning and safety learning explains why fears form quickly and dissolve slowly — and what to do about it.

The Science

Fear extinction involves new learning that inhibits, rather than erases, prior fear associations. It is context-dependent, sensitive to sleep, and enhanced by consolidation windows. Prazosin, sleep, D-cycloserine, and structured exposure all show effects.

The NSI Perspective

NSI treats safety learning as one of the primary therapeutic tasks. It is slow because the biology is slow — not because you are.

Clinical Implications

Repetition across contexts, adequate sleep, and consistent safety cues improve outcomes.

Practical Application

Safety learning is not one event. It is many events, over time, in different contexts. Patience with it is realism, not indulgence.
