Definition

Resource scarcity is the evolutionary condition under which the human nervous system was shaped, and its influences — hoarding, vigilance, comparison, cortisol reactivity — continue to shape modern life.

Why it matters

Modern abundance did not remove scarcity-shaped biology. Understanding this clarifies many behaviors that otherwise seem irrational.

The Science

Scarcity produces documented changes in cognitive bandwidth, decision-making, and stress physiology (Mullainathan and Shafir). Chronic scarcity worsens outcomes across health domains.
