REM Sleep

Definition

REM sleep (rapid eye movement sleep) is a distinct sleep stage marked by muscle atonia, vivid dreams, cortical activation, and cyclical occurrence throughout the night. It is essential for emotional processing, learning, and creativity.

Why it matters

REM sleep is where the nervous system does much of its emotional work. Poor REM sleep has consequences that go far beyond feeling tired.

The Science

REM cycles increase in duration across the night. During REM, the brain shows activation patterns similar to waking, but with reduced noradrenergic tone — a state that appears to support fear extinction, memory integration, and emotional recalibration. REM disturbances are documented in depression, PTSD, and after alcohol use.

NSI treats REM sleep as one of the nervous system’s primary integrators. Protecting it is not optional care.

Clinical Implications

Medications that suppress REM (alcohol, some antidepressants, benzodiazepines) have costs worth naming and discussing.

Practical Application

You do not just need more sleep. You need REM sleep. The last third of the night is where much of the emotional processing lives.
