Definition

Reconsolidation is the process by which a recalled memory briefly becomes editable before being re-stored. During this window, its emotional or associative content can be updated.

Why it matters

Reconsolidation is one of the most promising mechanisms in modern memory science. It provides a neurobiological basis for how therapy might change memory without erasing it.

The Science

Reconsolidation is robust in animal models and increasingly documented in humans. It underlies mechanisms proposed for EMDR, memory reconsolidation therapy, and some pharmacological approaches.

Clinical Implications

Treatments that leverage reconsolidation aim to re-activate a memory in a modified emotional context so the re-storage carries the modification.
