Protective Guarding

Protective Guarding within movement science and rehabilitation — the science, the human experience, and why it belongs inside a Nervous System Intelligence framework.

Definition

Protective guarding is the involuntary muscular bracing that occurs around perceived vulnerability — an injured joint, a scarred area, a place that once hurt. It is intelligent short-term protection with long-term costs.

Why it matters

Naming guarding as involuntary and intelligent — not weakness or bad habit — changes the tone of rehabilitation.

The Science

Sustained protective guarding maintains fear-avoidance cycles, restricts movement, and can prolong pain. It responds to safe, graded re-engagement.

The NSI Perspective

NSI treats guarding as a nervous system doing what it learned. It can, respectfully, be helped to relax.

Clinical Implications

Effective rehabilitation names guarding, does not shame it, and gradually invites the system to release.

Practical Application

If part of your body is holding tight, that is not fault. It is history. Small, safe experiences of movement can teach it that the danger has passed.
