Definition

Prenatal stress refers to maternal stress during pregnancy and its documented effects on fetal and later child development, including some epigenetic and endocrine signatures.

Why it matters

The field is real and important. It is also frequently exaggerated in ways that increase maternal guilt without improving outcomes. Balance matters.

The Science

Severe or chronic prenatal stress is associated with altered HPA axis calibration, some epigenetic differences, and modest changes in later child outcomes. Effects are population-level; individual prediction is limited.

NSI treats prenatal biology seriously without weaponizing it against mothers. Care, not blame, is the appropriate response.

Clinical Implications

Support for pregnant people is public health, not luxury.

Practical Application

If pregnancy was hard, your baby was not doomed by it. Population associations do not equal individual verdicts.
