Definition

Within Nervous System Intelligence, predictive processing is treated as one of the core organizing frameworks — alongside attachment, memory, and emotion — through which all clinical work can be understood and organized.

Why it matters

This framing unifies otherwise separate topics (pain, trauma, anxiety, addiction, mood) under a shared architecture, making care more coherent.

The Science

Contemporary neuroscience treats prediction as one of the master principles of brain function. Its clinical applications are still being tested — promising in many areas, incomplete in others.

The NSI Perspective

NSI holds four commitments in predictive-processing care. First, prediction is real and consequential. Second, the framework is powerful but not complete. Third, therapy is prediction updating. Fourth, safety and repetition are the substrate of updating.

Clinical Implications

Approaches that combine safe, meaningful, repeated experiences with cognitive reframing align with the underlying biology.

Practical Application

You are not stuck with the predictions your history laid down. You are, however, going to need real experience — not just insight — to update them.
