Definition
Polyvagal-informed care applies principles of predictability, consent, explanation, pacing, and choice to medical encounters. These principles do not require accepting all Polyvagal claims to be clinically useful.
Why it matters
Patients frequently experience medical care as threatening. Small changes in how care is delivered can substantially reduce that experience.
The Science
Trauma-informed and patient-centered care approaches have documented benefits across many settings, including reduced procedure distress and improved patient satisfaction.
The NSI Perspective
NSI treats care delivery as a nervous-system event. How something is done can matter as much as what is done.
Clinical Implications
Explaining before touching, offering choices, and pacing to the patient are simple, evidence-supported adjustments.
Practical Application
As a patient, you can ask providers to slow down, explain, or pause. As a provider, you can offer these before being asked.
