Definition

Grief produces distinct physical sensations — heaviness, chest tightness, hollow ache, fatigue, agitation, sighing respirations — that are documented across cultures and centuries.

Why it matters

The physicality of grief is often overlooked in a culture that treats it as “emotional.” Naming the body’s participation restores dignity to the experience.

The Science

Grief involves measurable cardiovascular changes (broken-heart syndrome / Takotsubo cardiomyopathy in extreme cases), immune changes, sleep disruption, and altered pain perception.
