Definition

Pain as protection is the evolutionary interpretation of pain as a signaling output that promoted survival by prompting avoidance of and recovery from tissue threat. Its persistence in the absence of tissue damage is a modern puzzle solved by predictive processing.

Why it matters

This framing complements pain neuroscience (Collection 8) with an evolutionary layer, further removing the moralization that so often surrounds chronic pain.

The Science

Pain signaling systems are ancient and highly conserved. Their modern dysregulations — chronic pain, central sensitization, phantom limb pain — arise because the system’s protective bias exceeds its accuracy in complex modern conditions.

The NSI Perspective

NSI holds pain as an evolved protective output that can, with care, be updated when its protection is no longer required.

Clinical Implications

Evolutionary framing supports the clinical work of Collection 8 without replacing it.

Practical Application
