Definition

Sleep and pain share deep bidirectional neurobiology. Poor sleep amplifies pain sensitivity; pain disrupts sleep. Restoring sleep is often central to restoring pain.

Why it matters

Sleep is one of the most consistently modifiable inputs to pain, yet it is often addressed last. Reordering priorities can transform outcomes.

The Science

Sleep deprivation increases central pain sensitivity, reduces descending inhibition, elevates inflammatory markers, and worsens mood — all pain-amplifying changes. Longitudinal studies show sleep problems often precede and predict chronic pain, more strongly than pain predicts sleep problems.

The NSI Perspective

NSI treats sleep as one of the nervous system’s primary reset processes. A protected sleep schedule is often as clinically important as any medication.

Clinical Implications

Sleep evaluation and cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) should be part of chronic pain care. Screening for sleep apnea is often overlooked and often relevant.

Practical Application

On days after poor sleep, pain that feels worse is not you being weak. It is biology. Treat sleep as pain treatment.
