Definition

Movement is one of the most powerful modulators of pain. Appropriate movement can reduce pain and sensitization; feared, guarded, or absent movement often perpetuates them.

Why it matters

Advice to “rest until the pain stops” is one of the most common and most harmful prescriptions in modern pain care. Understanding the role of movement changes lives.

The Science

Graded, paced movement reduces central sensitization, updates predictions, improves mood and sleep, and restores confidence. Mirror therapy, motor imagery, and body-illusion techniques show that even virtual or observed movement can reduce pain, indicating that movement acts through the brain’s representational systems, not just the muscles.

The NSI Perspective

NSI treats movement as one of the primary teachers of the nervous system. Every gentle, successful movement is a small update to the predictive system saying: this is safe.

Clinical Implications

Effective pain care almost always includes some form of graded, meaningful movement. The goal is not fitness for its own sake but retraining a protective system through direct experience.

Practical Application

If you have been afraid to move, you are not weak. You are protected. Start smaller than feels serious — and repeat. Small, safe, repeated movement is the true medicine.
