Definition

Mimicry is the automatic tendency to align posture, expression, and movement with another person. It supports rapport, empathy, and connection — often below awareness.

Why it matters

Understanding mimicry clarifies how connection is built and how disconnection is signaled.

The Science

Chameleon effect research (Chartrand and Bargh) documents automatic mimicry. It correlates with liking, rapport, and perceived similarity. Mirror neuron systems play a role, though the strong “mirror neuron” popular narrative overreaches.

The NSI Perspective

NSI treats mimicry as one of the ordinary ways nervous systems find each other.

Clinical Implications

Clinicians who match pace, posture, and tone (respectfully) tend to build alliance more easily.

Practical Application

You do not build connection by trying hard. You build it by letting your nervous system align, gently, with the person in front of you.
