Definition

Microbial metabolites are the small molecules produced by gut microbes — including short-chain fatty acids, neurotransmitter precursors, and immune-modulating compounds — that influence gut, immune, and brain function.

Why it matters

These metabolites are one of the most concrete mechanistic bridges between diet, microbiome, and health outcomes.

The Science

Short-chain fatty acids like butyrate, acetate, and propionate influence gut barrier integrity, immune tone, and systemic metabolism. Microbes also modulate tryptophan metabolism, bile acids, and neuroactive precursors.
