Definition

Memory consolidation is the process by which recent experiences are transformed into durable memory. Sleep is one of the primary times this occurs, with different sleep stages supporting different memory types.

Why it matters

What you sleep on becomes who you are. Poor sleep is not just tiredness — it is memory loss and identity loss in slow motion.

The Science

Slow-wave sleep supports declarative memory consolidation via hippocampal–cortical dialogue. REM sleep supports emotional and procedural memory. Sleep deprivation impairs both encoding and consolidation.
