Definition

Mate selection is the set of processes — evolved, cultural, individual — that shape which partners humans choose, at what timing, and under what conditions. It is neither purely biological nor purely cultural.

Why it matters

Evolutionary framing here is often misused (to justify stereotypes) and often useful (to understand attachment, courtship, and jealousy). Both deserve care.

The Science

Human mate preferences show cross-cultural regularities (e.g., attention to health cues, some sex differences in specific preferences), substantial individual variation, and strong cultural modulation. Buss, Fisher, and others have documented both universals and variability.
