Definition

Loneliness — the subjective sense of insufficient meaningful connection — produces immune signaling changes that resemble those of chronic stress.

Why it matters

Loneliness is not just a feeling; it is a physiological state with immune, cardiovascular, and neural consequences.

The Science

Loneliness is associated with elevated inflammatory markers, altered gene expression, poorer sleep, and increased mortality risk in longitudinal studies. It appears to be at least partly causal, not simply a marker of illness.

The NSI Perspective

NSI holds meaningful connection as biological medicine. Rebuilding it is not optional care.

Clinical Implications

Loneliness deserves clinical attention as seriously as smoking or hypertension in some risk models.

Practical Application

If loneliness feels physical, it is. Reaching for connection — imperfect, repeated, sometimes awkward — is legitimate medicine.
