Definition
Living while continuing to love describes the eventual, uneven capacity to re-engage with life while continuing to love and be shaped by those who have been lost. It is one of the most honest destinations of grief.
Why it matters
This framing preserves what the older “closure” language obscured. You do not stop loving. You learn to carry it.
The Science
Long-term bereavement research (Bonanno, Zisook, Shear) shows most bereaved people integrate loss without pathological grief. Ongoing love for the deceased is compatible with functional life.
The NSI Perspective
NSI treats “continuing to love” as a mark of durable relationship, not unresolved grief.
Clinical Implications
Care should support integration, not extinction, of the bond.
Practical Application
You will not stop loving them. You will, in time, learn to live while continuing to love. Both are true.
