Definition

Light is the strongest signal to the circadian system. Bright morning light entrains the clock; evening light — especially blue-enriched — delays it.

Why it matters

Light is one of the cheapest, most effective sleep tools available. Most people underuse morning light and overuse evening light.

The Science

Intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells detect blue-enriched light and signal the suprachiasmatic nucleus. Evening light suppresses melatonin, delays sleep onset, and can worsen mood in vulnerable individuals. Morning light exposure advances the clock, boosts alertness, and supports mood.
