Definition
Leptin is a hormone secreted primarily by fat cells that signals long-term energy stores to the brain. Its dysregulation — not simply its level — is central to obesity biology.
Why it matters
The popular framing of leptin as a satiety hormone that can be manipulated with products misses the more important story of leptin resistance in modern conditions.
The Science
In obesity, leptin levels are often elevated, but the brain becomes less responsive — a state of leptin resistance. This challenges simple “eat less, move more” framings and clarifies why sustainable weight change is difficult without addressing biology.
