Definition

Jet lag is the temporary mismatch between the body’s internal clock and the external environment after rapid travel across time zones. It is a real physiological state, not weakness.

Why it matters

Managing jet lag well is a small case study in circadian biology anyone can apply.

The Science

Eastward travel is harder than westward because advancing the clock is more difficult than delaying it. Strategic light exposure, timed melatonin, meal timing, and gradual pre-adjustment shorten adaptation.
