Definition

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder of gut–brain interaction characterized by abdominal pain, altered bowel habits, and increased visceral sensitivity, without a single unifying structural cause.

Why it matters

IBS is real, physiological, and frequently dismissed. Naming it as a gut–brain disorder — not “in your head” — changes both dignity and treatment.

The Science

IBS involves altered visceral sensitivity, motility, immune activation, microbiome changes, and central pain processing. Effective treatments include dietary strategies (e.g., low FODMAP under supervision), gut-directed hypnotherapy, CBT, some medications, and stress regulation.

The NSI Perspective

NSI holds IBS as one of the clearest clinical examples that the gut and brain are one system. Care must speak to both.

Clinical Implications

Gut-directed behavioral therapies have strong evidence and should be offered, not treated as last resorts.

Practical Application

If IBS has been treated as if it were in your imagination, you were failed by that framing. This is a nervous system condition of a nervous organ.
