Definition

Interoceptive awareness of the gut is the capacity to feel and interpret gut sensations — hunger, fullness, discomfort, unease, warmth — with accuracy and without panic.

Why it matters

This skill is a foundation of both eating regulation and gut symptom management. It is learnable.

The Science

Interoceptive accuracy varies across individuals and is altered in conditions like IBS, eating disorders, and anxiety disorders. Practices that gently increase attention to internal sensation — body scans, mindful eating, breath work — improve outcomes in several studies.

The NSI Perspective

NSI treats interoception as one of the primary senses of the intelligent nervous system. Its education is real work.

Clinical Implications

Interoception-focused approaches are legitimate components of care for IBS, eating disorders, and functional symptoms.

Practical Application

Feeling your gut clearly — without catastrophe, without dissociation — is a skill. It grows.

Before you go

Two quiet questions.

How much of what you just read named something you already know inside your own body?

How much did this open a new question you didn’t have before?
