Interoception is the sense of the internal state of the body. Pain is one of the most vivid interoceptive experiences — and interoceptive accuracy, sensitivity, and interpretation all shape how pain is felt.

Why it matters

How the nervous system reads the body determines much of what pain becomes. Interoception is a modifiable skill, and its role in pain is increasingly clear.

The Science

The insular cortex integrates interoceptive signals with predictions, emotion, and salience. Altered interoception is documented in chronic pain, fibromyalgia, and functional somatic disorders. Interoception-focused practices — breathwork, body scans, mindful movement — change insular activity and pain outcomes.

The NSI Perspective

NSI treats interoception as one of the primary senses of Nervous System Intelligence. Learning to feel the body accurately — without judgment or catastrophe — is a foundational skill of pain care.

Clinical Implications

Interoceptive training is a legitimate, evidence-supported component of chronic pain treatment.
