Definition

Internal working models are the implicit beliefs and expectations a person carries about relationships — what to expect, what to offer, what is safe, what is dangerous. They are formed early and updated slowly.

These models operate below conscious awareness and shape choices about partners, friends, and work relationships throughout life.
