Definition

Intergenerational findings examine whether epigenetic effects of environment or trauma in one generation can be transmitted to the next. Human evidence is limited, contested, and often over-extrapolated.

Why it matters

This is one of the most-misrepresented areas of epigenetics. Some effects are supported by careful research; sweeping claims are not.

The Science

Animal studies (Meaney, Dias, Ressler) provide clearer evidence for some intergenerational epigenetic effects. Human evidence — Dutch Hunger Winter cohort, Yehuda’s Holocaust survivor studies — shows some intriguing findings but with substantial methodological caveats. Many popular "trauma is inherited in your DNA" claims exceed what the science has established.

The NSI Perspective

NSI holds space for real intergenerational biology while refusing to reduce family patterns to a single epigenetic mechanism. Multigenerational patterns are usually a mixture of biology, attachment, environment, and story.

Clinical Implications

Take intergenerational patterns seriously without pretending epigenetics fully explains them.

Practical Application

You may carry echoes of your ancestors, biologically and otherwise. You are not doomed by them.
