Definition
In EMDR, “installation” refers to the process of strengthening a more accurate, adaptive belief that replaces the previously held negative cognition. It is not forced positivity.
Why it matters
Distinguishing installation from affirmation matters. “I am powerless” is not replaced by “I am powerful.” It is replaced by something the nervous system can actually believe, such as “I have choices now.”
The Science
The distinction between forced positive belief and gradually integrated adaptive belief is clinically significant. The former often fails; the latter can hold.
The NSI Perspective
NSI insists on truthfulness in adaptive beliefs. If your body knows it is a lie, it will not hold.
Clinical Implications
Adaptive beliefs should be tested against felt sense. A belief that produces bodily agreement is more likely to endure than one that only sounds good.
Practical Application
When looking for a more adaptive belief, ask what your body actually agrees with, not what you think you should believe.
